Over the past five years, state leaders in Wyoming have taken important steps to reimagine high school education and better prepare graduates for the workforce and world. At the heart of this effort is the state’s Profile of a Graduate, which was developed in partnership with students, families, educators, community leaders, and employers across the state and includes the broad set of knowledge, skills, and competencies every graduate should have by the time they leave high school.
The state also launched Wyoming’s Future of Learning, a collaborative that includes the governor, state superintendent, the state board of education, the University of Wyoming’s School of Education, community colleges, and the state administrators’ association. The collaborative is leading a pilot program—Reimagining and Innovating the Delivery of Education (RIDE)—focused on helping schools make the transition to student-centered, competency-based learning models. To support the pilot and the implementation of the state’s Profile of a Graduate, state leaders have developed a host of resources aimed at enabling educators and local leaders to make this shift.
To build on this work, state leaders can explore opportunities to launch a statewide initiative with dedicated resources to incentivize community-led high school redesign aligned to the state’s Profile of a Graduate.
